Membership

ARM members can be organizations from any part of the supply chain, which are committed to the improvement of the quality of life of artisanal and small-scale mining producers and their communities, believe in the usefulness of the development and implementation of fair trade criteria and standards applicable to ASM products, and that are committed to the environmental stewardship of fragile ecosystems where ASM (Artisanal and small scale mining) is an economic activity. Individual applications will only be accepted in those cases where the individual is directly involved in the development of the standards.  However, these individuals will voice but not vote in the assemblies.

Once ARM generates a Fairtrade scheme and standards, the ARM Board will develop a more formal and differentiated structure of members and affiliates, according to the roles and responsibilities of different kinds of organizations in a mature standards setting and certification scheme.  We understand it will be crucial to ensure transparency, credibility and accountability in the scheme, so there is no conflict of interest between the roles of different stakeholders in the system.  However, for this first phase of development we welcome organizations from all parts of the supply chain of metals and minerals, as long as they agree with and promote the principles on which ARM works:  social and environmental responsibility, improving equity in trade, establishing long term partnerships between producers and traders, and building sustainable livelihoods in ASM communities. In the General Assembly of Members to take place in 2008, the ARM Board will revisit this arrangement, and it is expected that members with voting rights and affiliates without voting rights will be determined to prevent conflict of interest.  At any time over the next year, ARM is likely to decide on establishing an annual financial contribution from members.

At this time ARM invites membership requests to be made through a formal letter directed to the ARM Board of Directors, in which the interested party explains the work undertaken by the institution or organization and the reasons why they want to form part of ARM. All requests must be sent to: arm@communitymining.org
